Pelvic Pain Advocate Feature: "Tightly Wound", a film by Shelby Hadden about her experience with Vaginismus
Tightly Wound is a nine-minute animated personal essay film about the director – Shelby Hadden’s
– experience with vaginismus. Vaginismus is a pelvic floor condition characterized by involuntary
contractions of the pelvic floor muscles, causing pain, penetration problems, and inability to have
intercourse. The film chronicles the numerous doctors’ visits where no one could tell her what she had or how to
fix it. It recounts her progress in physical therapy, the humiliating ways guys have rejected her
because she couldn’t have sex with them, and the way shame, anger, and hatred have plagued
The goals of the film are not only to raise awareness for pelvic floor dysfunction, but to also help encourage young
women to become advocates for the bodies, health, and sexualities, as well as create more avenues for stronger
After a successful Kickstarter campaign which was covered by both Cosmopolitan and Bustle, Tightly Wound won both
the Project of the Week and Project of the Month on IndieWire.
